Heading B8J. [Also in Division F1] A double-acting hydraulic ram for advancing a conveyer or other machine towards a mine face is provided with alternative fluid conduits whereby at least two alternative effective piston pressure surfaces for extending the ram are provided. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the cylinder 1 is provided with detachable end covers 2, 3 and contains a piston 4 having a tubular piston rod 5. The piston 4 has a central axial bore 6 lined with a guide sleeve in which a fluid pressure conduit 7, detachably screwed into a bore 8 in the end cover 3, is guided. The cover 3 accommodates control means for manually controlling the flow of fluid to the cylinder chambers through conduits 10, 12. To extend the ram, fluid under pressure is fed through the conduit 10 and the chamber 15 communicates through a bore 9 in the piston rod 5 and the conduit 7 to the return conduit 12 so that the effective pressure surface area is x<SP>1</SP>. If the available fluid pressure is increased, the fluid may be fed to both chambers 11, 15 so that the effective pressure area for extending the ram is x<SP>1</SP>-V. If the ram is to be used with considerably higher fluid pressure, a second fluid conduit 16, Fig. 3, is connected between a supply conduit 18 and a conduit 17, conduit 7 is connected to a return conduit and the bore 9 is plugged. To extend the ram pressure fluid is fed through conduit 10 to the chamber 11 and the effective piston area is x<SP>3</SP>. The effective piston area may be further reduced to the cross-sectional area of the conduit 7 by feeding fluid pressure to the chambers 11, 15 and the interior of the piston rod 5, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the conduit 7 is removed, the bore 6 in the piston and the bore 9 in the piston rod are plugged so that the effective piston area for extending the ram is the total piston area. This area may be reduced by V by applying fluid pressure to the chamber 15. The conduits 7 may be changed for conduits of different cross-sectional areas.
