Abstract
The invention comprises a compound of the general formula <FORM:1004668/C2/1> wherein W represents a b -hydroxymethylene group, an acyloxymethylene group wherein the acyl radical is that of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from 1-12 carbon atoms inclusive or a carbonyl group and R represents hydrogen or acyl as above defined and a process for the production of compounds of the formula <FORM:1004668/C2/2> wherein Ac represents an acyl radical as defined above by subjecting a compound of the formula <FORM:1004668/C2/3> wherein X represents chlorine, bromine or iodine to treatment with silver fluoride, and then if desired hydrolysing, or hydrolysing and oxidizing, the thus produced compounds to yield the corresponding 3-hydroxy and 3-keto derivatives respectively. Oxidation may be effected with chromic acid. The 17-hydroxyl compounds may be obtained by subjecting the corresponding 17-acylate to saponification. Pharmaceutical composition having progestational activity and containing the above compounds are administered orally or parenterally in pills, tablets, capsules, syrups, elixirs, suspensions and solutions.
