Abstract

Transformers.-An adjustable transformer for wireless telegraphy comprises a primary coil with two or more mutually-inductive and relativelymovable subdivisions, a similar secondary coil, and means for adjusting the coupling of the primary and secondary coils. As shown in Fig. 1, one subdivision of the primary coil is wound on a cylinder 6 secured to a standard 2, and the other subdivision is wound on a cylinder 5, which may be telescoped over the cylinder 6. The secondary coils are similarly wound on cylinders 7, 8, which may be telescoped one within the other, and both may be telescoped into the coil 6. The subdivisions of both primary and secondary coils may be connected in series or in parallel, and may be wound so as to assist or to oppose each other. In a modification, shown in plan in Fig. 9, the coils are wound on spherical segments. The movable support 17 carrying one division of the primary coil is pivoted on a vertical pin 18 so as to swing relatively to the fixed segment 16. The segment 20 carrying one of the secondary coil divisions is pivoted on vertical trunnions 21 projecting inwards from the segment 17, and the inner segment 22 carrying the other secondary coil division is pivoted within the segment 20 by means of radial horizontal pins 23. The self-induction of the primary is adjusted by swinging the segment 17 by the handle 19, and that of me secondary by turning the pins 23 and inner segment 22 through any angle less than 360 degrees. A pointer 28 indicates the latter adjustment on a disk or knob 24. The secondary may then be adjusted relatively to the primary by rocking the outer and inner segments 20, 22 as one unit about the vertical trunnions 21. The primary windings 16<a>, 17<a>, Fig. 11, are in series and are connected to the binding-posts 34, 36 through a switch 35, which may be thrown over so as to cause the two windings to assist or to oppose each other. The secondary windings are connected to posts 30, 33 through the trunnion pins 21, 23.
