A unit for a frameless curved roof structure is polyplanar with four plane surfaces each at an angle to the others, the edges of the plane surfaces which are also those of the unit lying in two planes inclined to one another and the unit having means, such as ribs or flanges, around its periphery to join it to adjacent units. As shown in Fig. 4, the unit 40 is of pyramidal form with optional inner surfacing 64, 65. It may be of similar but concave construction (Fig. 5, not shown). An alternative unit 127, Fig. 24, has external facings 128, 129. The units may contain insulating material and are of plywood, hardboard, aluminium, glass fibre, plastics, or paper, being assembled from separate panels or from folded panels. Tensioned tie bars or struts may connect opposite corners of each unit. The units may be wholly or partly of translucent material with a ventilator and are joined by various arrangements of bolts using integral or inserted sealing gaskets. A method by which an arched roof is erected is described, the roof being assembled from two opposite sides and subsequently joined in the middle, the roof being connected to the ground at the sides through footing plates which pivot.
