Abstract
1,001,153. Transverse-flow machines. FIRTH CLEVELAND Ltd. Sept. 7, 1961 [Sept. 8, 1960], No. 32165/61. Heading F1C. A rotor for a transverse-flow machine comprises at least two axially-aligned interconnected moulded components, each component having a support member of circular periphery and a series of blades moulded integrally with and extending from the support member parallel to the rotor axis and in a ring thereabout, and an additional support member of circular periphery, the ends of the blades of at least one component remote from the support member thereof being interengaged with another of the support members, the last-mentioned support member having, in the completed rotor, blades extending from that support member to opposite sides thereof with the blades on one side in staggered relationship with the blades on the other side. The rotor component 31 shown in Fig. 1a comprises an end disc 30 integral with blades 32 having projections 33 which can be glued into holes 34, Fig. 1b, in an intermediate disc (or ring) 35. The disc 35 has a further set of holes 34 intercalated with the first-mentioned holes, to receive the blade projections 33<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1c, of a further rotor component 37 having blades 38, 38<SP>1</SP> projecting from opposite sides of a central disc 36. Further discs 35 and components 37 may be added, and the final component may be similar to the component 31 but of opposite hand. Alternatively, an end disc 44, Fig. I e (not shown), having holes for engagement with blade projections and provided with a hub for connection to a shaft, may be used. An annular weakened portion around the hub permits flexure to compensate for misalignment between the shaft and the rotor axis. A similar provision is made at 31<SP>1</SP> in the end disc 30. A further component which may be used in addition to, or in place of, components 37 and discs 35 comprises a plain disc 42, Fig. 1d (not shown), provided with blades at one side only, holes similar to the holes 34 being provided intermediate the blades. All components may be moulded from plastics material. Specification 876,611 is referred to.
