Abstract

1,001,075. Shaft seals. DUNHAM-BUSH Ltd. June 5, 1962, No. 21680/62. Heading F2B. In a motor-driven centrifugal pump 2, the pump shaft 10 is packed by a seal assembly 30 and any liquid or vapour leaking past the seal 30 is prevented from entering the pump motor 4 by a slinger fan 36 which is secured to the shaft 10 and pumps air from the motor along the shaft towards the pump. The fan 36 is housed in a chamber 48 formed in a portion 42 of the pump housing 18 secured to the motor casing 44. The portion 40 has four outlet openings 50 communicating with the chamber 48 and four inlet openings 52 aligned with openings 56 in a disc 54. Each of the openings 50 and 52 is separated from the adjacent opening by a radial web 62. The fan 36 is a metal disc having an inner portion and arms 68 and, in operation, draws air into the motor casing 44 through openings 52 and 56 and discharges it from the chamber 48 through openings 50; any liquid or vapour leakage from the seal 30 being discharged outwardly with the air from the chamber 48.
