Abstract

A tanning cream contains (a) 35-50 wt.% of pure lambs' tallow, (b) 7-15% of lard, (c) 25-35% of annatto oil, (d) 3-5% of powdered pine resin, and (e) 3-6% of extract of Allium cepa (essence of onion skin). Pref., the compsn. contains (a) 43.5%, (b) 11%, (c) 30%, (d) 3%, (e) 4%, 5% of the essential oil of sweet orange and 3.5% of essential oil of ylang-ylang. ADVANTAGE - The compsn. has no topical toxicity, does not inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and has slight intrinsic inhibition to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It protects the skin, while giving rapid, natural tanning. Moisturising of the surface skin layers is promoted, calming the heat of sunstroke. In an example, pure lambs' tallow was melted and filtered. 20 g of pine resin powder was added to a mixt. of 435 g of tallow and 110 g of lard, at 180 deg. C, followed by addn. of 300 g of annatto oil, 40 g of extract of Allium cepa, 35 g of essential oil of ylang-ylang and 50 g of essential oil of sweet orange. Mixing was continued during cooling, and the compsn. was packed into a pot or tube before final cooling.
