Abstract

Electrochemical display cell comprises (a) a soln. of methylene blue forming an electrolytic soln. capable of changing in appearance under the effect of an electric current, situated between (b) two electrodes, at least one of which is transparent. The electrolytic soln. may be liq., e.g. using aq. sulphuric acid as solvent and opt. contg. an oxide such as TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, GeO2 or mixts. of these, and opt. other additives such as glycerol, polyvinyl alcohol or polymers. The electrolytic soln. may also be solid, e.g. an ion exchange resin. The electrodes and cell walls may be of any known type, esp. NESA glass. The cells have a white or blue appearance depending on excitation. The cells have a low excitation voltage (less than 2 V) and a power of 1 mJ is generally sufficient for a display of 1 cm2. Changes in tint can be attained in less than 40 ms, allowing the display of 25 images per sec., which is suitable for cinematographic or television use.

Description

The present invention relates to a. cell.

It finds an application in the display of alphanumeric characters.

Electrochemical display cells constitute an interesting means for producing display screens. The phenomena which are at the basis of the functioning of these devices can be of various natures: deposition of reflective or absorbent metallic layers (case of silver layers for example) or change of coloration under the action of a current (case of tungsten oxide for example, or iridium oxide, etc.).

The present invention relates to the second type of cell, in which a display is obtained by change of coloration or appearance of coloration under the effect of the passage of an electric current in one direction and an erasure is carried out by the passage of a current . in the other direction.

Most display cells of this kind suffer from drawbacks linked to the fact that the products used in the composition of the reactive medium are hillsides and difficult to use.

The object of the present invention is precisely to propose an electrochemical display cell in which the reaction medium is particularly inexpensive and easy to implement.

This object is achieved according to the invention by the use of methylene blue in combination with an electrolyte.

Preferably, this solution is mixed with powdered titanium oxide (TiO). Other powders can be used such as ZnO, A1203 and GeO2, or mixtures of these powders (for example TiO2 + GeO2).

The solvent used may be an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, for example, optionally added with other products (glycerol, polyvinyl alcohol or other polymers) which improve performance and in particular the memory effect.

However, the solvent can also be a solid electrolyte such as, for example, an ion exchange resin.

With regard to the production of the electrodes and the walls of the cell, the technology used for the known cells remains applicable in the invention.

Le verre dit "NESA" est utilisable. The glass called "NESA" can be used.

The cell of the invention offers a contrasting white or blue appearance, depending on its excitation. The memory effect is greater than 1 minute and the registration time less than one second. A number of display-erase cycles greater than 104 can be reached.

The cell excitation voltage is low and less than 2V. The electronic control circuit is therefore particularly simple to produce, unlike other cells of the prior art which require voltages of a few tens of volts which do not accommodate well with the use of integrated circuits.

The intensity can be of the order of 10 mA / cm2. An energy of 1 mJ is generally sufficient for an inscription on 1 cm2. With such conditions, a color change can be obtained in less than 40 ms. It will be observed that this duration makes it possible to obtain a display rate of 25 images per second as for cinema or television.

The invention can therefore easily be applied to these two fields.

Finally, the tolerances on the geometry of the cell and in particular on its thickness are greater than for.

This thickness can be between 10 and 100 m approximately.

It will be observed that the products mentioned above do not decompose, do not deteriorate in air and are not toxic, which gives the cell of the invention great ease of use.

A titre indicatif, une composition possible conforme à l'invention est la suivante - TiO2 50 % en poids - H2SO4 0,5 % en poids - bleu de méthylène 2 % - glycérol 20 % -H20 q.s. 100*  As an indication, a possible composition in accordance with the invention is as follows - TiO2 50% by weight - H2SO4 0.5% by weight - methylene blue 2% - glycerol 20% -H20 q.s. 100 *
