Abstract

In the pyrolysis or thermal decomposition of aq. Fe Cl3 solns. contg. HCl, esp. solns. contg. >150 g/l Fe3+ by vaporising the soln. in a reactor, mechanically separating solid pyrolysis prods. from the gas mixt. and recovery of HCl acid e.g. by adiabatic absorption in water or aq. soln., the improvement is that the droplets formed by vaporisation of the soln. are entrained in a hot gaseous medium travelling in the same direction as the soln. Used e.g. for recovery of Fe2O3 and HCl acid (for recycle) from pickling of steel sheet. The process can be used to treat solns. contg. 2% Cl- and gives 85-98% Fe recoveries as the oxide by dry centrifuging in a cyclone downstream of the reactor.
