Abstract

A circumferential weld connecting two pipe members is non-distinctively tested using an ultrasonic, multi-transducer probe which is mounted on a carriage. The carriage is mounted on one of the pipe members which is formed with an annular tracking ring to maintain a constant geometrical relationship between the probe assembly, the pipe member and the weld. Used for testing welds in pipes, tubes, conduits and couplings in underwater pipelines. The posn. of the probe assembly is monitored during its movement so that defect posns. can be easily determined. The carriage may be modified to carry a welding torch.
