Abstract

A carpet underlay comprises a combination of a layer of material having a high coefficient of friction and at least one layer of fibrous material. The high friction layer is pref. of flexable polyurethane foam, or a rubber lated, about 2-5 mm thick, or a net or mesh coated with rubber or PVC. The fibrous layer is a non-woven mat or a combed cotton or wool. The overall thickness is 7-8 mm. Esp. used for preventing slipping or skidding of carpets or rugs placed on surfaces such as moquette matting, marble, tiles, polished wood etc. The composite underlay provides a grip on the underside of the carpet with the high friction layer, a grip on the matting by partial engagement by the fibrous surface and support against excessive local crushing. The part of the fibrous layer adjacent to the high friction layer may be modified by e.g. needling to obtain a higher density and degree of entanglement, hence higher cohesion and stiffness, than the bulk of the fibrous layer. Opt. the denser fibrous region is partially impregnated with polyester resin.
