Abstract

The pressure compensating device, esp. for mixer taps with thermostats, consists of a cylindrical tap housing with cold water (4) and hot water (5) inlets. Each inlet leads to a chamber (204), one wall of which has a diaphragm (205) to which is attached a piston rod (210). the rod joins both pistons and a third diaphragm (209) which is located in a central chamber (208). The central chamber is joined to the outer ones via inlets (207) which can be progressively shut off by the tapered heads of the pistons so that they operate as throttle valves. When there is a pressure difference between the hot and cold flows, the inlet with the higher pressure displaces the central diaphragm in the direction of the other inlet. This increases the aperture of the throttle valve on the lower pressure inlet and decreases that of the higher pressure inlet to equalise the pressures.
