Abstract
The seal at the compressor end of the turbocompressor shaft (24) has a flexible diaphragm with a central hole. The periphery of the diaphragm is fixed w.r.t. the bearing housing. A bush (80) carried by the shaft has an annular face which abuts against a fixed annular face of the bearing housing. A gap is formed in the radial direction between the bush and the housing. This gap is bridge by the diaphragm. Gas that normally leaks from the compressor draws the diaphragm away from the annular face of the bearing housing. If a vacuum occurs in the compressor, the diaphragm clings to the face of the housing and prevents lubrication oil from passing into the compressor housing from the bearing housing.
