Abstract

Appts. for recovering a film of a hydrocarbon from the surface of water comprises a grid made of a hydrophobic material, wet preferentially by the hydrocarbon in the presence of water and free from residual polar character. The grid is carried on a support so that it dips partly into the medium being purified and is driven at a fixed speed. The appts. incorporates also a means of discharging the entrained hydrocarbon and of collecting it. The grid is a metal grid coated with a material having as a base a fluorocarbon fpd. of the formula CF3-(CF2)n-X where n is a whole number between 3 and 10 and X is a functional group depending on the metal and such that the fluorocarbon cpd. gives a stable cpd. with it.
