Abstract

The optical lens focal length is made variable by use of a piezoelectric element. The mechanism consists of a transparent vessel(3) which has all plane surfaces except one which is bound by the variable section of the lens. The vessel is filled with an index matching liquid or gelatinous material such as silicon oil. A small expansion volume(14) is provided at one side of the vessel. The non-plane side of the vessel is sealed to a transparent element(2) which is itself bonded to a two layer curved piezoelectric element(6, 7) which has a transparent lens section whose curvature varies as a function of an applied voltage(8, 9, 10).
