Abstract

A current of dry air passes through an evaporator to contact salty water and becomes loaded with water vapour. The moist air is then cooled in a condenser to yield purified water. A vapour compression refrigeration system provides a refrigerant evaporator surface to cool the water condenser. Refrigerant vapour passes through a compressor serving as a heat pump which delivers to a refrigerant condenser providing a heating surface to warm water in the water evaporator. The water evaporator is pref. an enclosed vessel in which air is bubbled through the water and delivered to the water condenser via a circulating fan. The water in the evaporator is pref. heated by a coil or tube bundle serving as a refrigerant condenser in the vapour compression refrigeration system. Energy consumption of the system is low.
