Abstract

The free wheel and torque limiter is interposed between engine shaft and gearb-x input shaft in a motor vehicle. When the accelerator pedal is suddenly released, the mechanism prevents sudden decelerations of the vehicle. The mechanism is fitted within the normal clutch hub and consists of two concentric annular parts between which a free wheel transmits drive in the forward direction. When the accelerator is released and the gearbox shaft tries to drive the engine, the free wheel releases and the torque is transmitted via the torque limiter. The latter consists of a spring loaded ring driven by teeth from the inner hub and bearing on the outer part via a friction disc.
