Abstract

Pairs of in phase impulses having a frequency of pref. 10 to 150 Hz are superimposed on the electrical supply to an electrolysis cell, one on the D.C. current to the anode and one on the continuous voltage between the anode and cathode. The direction of the pair of impulses is compared and if there is an increase in the current to the anode which brings about a simultaneous decrease in voltage between the anode and cathode then the anode and cathode are touching. Anode current is measured by an anode and a voltmeter is connected between the anode and cathode, both being connected to a component which discriminates in the direction of the pairs of impulses in phase. This discriminating component can be connected to an automatic device which, on detecting impulses of opposite directions, moves the anode away from the cathode. Alternatively the system can be used for positioning the anodes, by gradually bringing the anodes nearer to the cathode until opposite direction impulses are detected then withdrawing the anodes a preset distance. Used in electrolysis cells with mercury cathodes, e.g. for electrolysis of a sodium chloride brine. Gives detection of local contact between anode and cathode in a reliable, accurate and quick method.
