Abstract

Burning of polyurethane foam for seat upholstery is prevented by covering the outer surface of the foam completely or partially with a glass fabric with dense fibres, which may be directly adhered to the foam with any adhesive, which also seals the fabric and thus prevents entry of air into the foam. In tests where the glass fabric was previously torn, only the exposed portions of the foam were consumed, and the flames did not spread to the foam portions protected by the fabric. The adhesive also bonds the fibres together, increasing the wear resistance of the fabric.
