Abstract

A self locking pincer type tool with serrated jaws (3, 4) with the pivot pin (5) sliding in a slot (6) in one jaw (4) to adjust the gap between the jaws, can be operated with one hand when locked. A toothed rack (9) attached to the bottom of one arm (2) engages corresponding teeth on the other arm (1), the teeth being shaped so that they engage positively as the jaws tighten on the workpiece. The rack teeth (10) are undercut and slope towards the pivot end of the rack in a preferred design, the mating teeth being correspondingly undercut, sloping in the opposite direction. A suitable friction spring can be included between the arm (2) and the rack (9) at the pivot point.
