Abstract

The electrodes (4) of this over-voltage protector are sealed in an argon-filled glass tube and connected to tongue contacts (2) at either end of the tube. The electrodes are made of iron with inserts of compressed barium in their faces and separated by about 1mm. Attached to either electrode is a small plate of copper and silver alloy (6). The electrodes will support arcs for a normal over-voltage period. If however, the arc is of extended duration, the alloy plate melts and short-circuits the electrodes. This ensures that the equipment is protected in prolonged over-voltage conditions, whereas previously the entire device would have shattered.
