Abstract
1329943 Cold-cathode tubes SIEMENS AG 10 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 981/72 Heading H1D The surface of at least one of the electrodes 1, 2 of a surge voltage diverter is covered with a metal foil 5 of larger area than that of said surface. Terminals 8 are secured to the frustum-shaped electrodes 1 and 2 which are sealed into the ends of a ceramic insulator 3 by glass 4 or solder. The edges of the foils 5, which are preferably of iron, screen the seals from sputtered or vaporized electrode material. When overload occurs the edges of the foils bend into contact with each other and may fuse together as shown at 6, in either case providing a short-circuit. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the foils have central dished portions which are welded or soldered to the electrodes.
