Abstract

The solid matter is inserted via a lock whose shutters are alternately opened and closed. The volume of each batch of material loaded into the lock is less than that of the lock itself, to allow easy opening and closing of the shutters. The material can be discharged onto the top shutter when closed at such a rate that in the period when closed the volume accumulated is less than that of the lock. A metering mechanism can be fitted between the material storage hopper and the discharge chute leading to the lock, typically in the form of a plate distributor whose rotational speed is matched to the operating frequency of the shutters.
