Abstract

A downhole well valve is adapted to receive an auxiliary valve which can take over flow control when the closure member malfunctions, the operating sleeve in the original valve also serving to operate the auxiliary valve closure member. Both valves may have rotary closure members, and the auxiliary valve may be installed and retrieved using pump-down tools. The valves may both operate as safety valves by closing upon loss of control press. The closure member of the original valve is pref. locked open upon installation of the auxiliary valve.
