Abstract
Sub-eutectic AlSi-based alloy contg. 8-10% Si, 1-5% Cu, 0.05-2% Ni, 0.1-0.6% Mn, 0.3-0.7% Mg, 0.1-0.25% Zr, bal. Al, and pref. 0.7% Fe and/or 0.1% Ti, and useful as component pts. for internal combustion engines, esp. pistons. Alloys have (i) high tensile strength, elongation at break and hardness and improved creeping strength at temps. of use; (ii) time yield limits exceeded those of standard piston alloys by 58-68%.
