Abstract

One-step prepn. of vicinal diols is by reaction of aq. solns. of peracids of 2-5C without catalysts with olefins of low solubility in water, using 5 moles H2O/mole peracid and controlling heat evolution either by gradually adding peracid, or allowing reaction in 2-phase system at low temp. and then as 1-phase system at higher temp. Pref. 15-30 moles water used. Pref. temp. is 45-80 degrees C.
