Abstract

Pyridine (I), piperidine (II) and I-II mixtures are prepd. by catalytic cyclisation of 1,5-diaminopentane (III). (III) vapour, pref. dild. with H2, is passed over a catalyst consisting of a gp. IB or VIII metal on a suitable support (e.g. Ni-SiO2 or Pd-Al2O3) at 125-300 degrees (pref. 150-285 degrees) Complete conversion occurs with contact times 1 sec, the ratio I : II depending on the temp. and catalyst.
