Abstract

Storage stability of an aq. soln. produced by condensing urea with formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1:1.2 to 1:2.3 at a pH of 4-6.5 opt. in presence of a minor amt. of a modifying agent (stored at pH 7-9) is improved by 50-100% by carrying out the condensation to a solids content of 50-65% opt. with evaporation; cooling the soln. to a temp. 40 degrees C; adjusting the pH to >=7.5 with an alkali hydroxide soln.; and only then adding 0.05-0.5% of an amine which has the formula R1R1NR2 (where R1 is -CH2CH2OH, -CH2CHOHCH3 or -CH2-CH2-CH2OH; and R2 is H or has the same meaning as R1). These solns. are used as adhesives in the prodn. of chipboards, veneer, etc.
