Abstract
1,198,710. Lactam-modified melamine-formaldehyde impregnating solutions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 7 Dec., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966; 25 March, 1967; 13 July, 1967], No. 55710/67. Heading C3R. An aqueous impregnating resin solution is prepared by condensing melamine with formaldehyde, and optionally with up to 20 wt. per cent of the melamine of another compound which can be polycondensed with formaldehyde, in aqueous medium in the presence of 3-15 wt. per cent of the melamine plus formaldehyde of a lactam having 4-9 C atoms in the lactam ring. Omega lactams are preferred. Suitable cocondensable compounds include urea, substituted ureas, carboxylic acid amides, toluenesulphonamides, alcohols, glycols, and amines. The reaction is preferably conducted at pH 7- 10 and 50-95‹ C., and the product should still be soluble in the aqueous medium at the reaction temperature. In examples melamine is condensed with formaldehyde, and optionally ptoluenesulphonamide, in water i.p.o. #-caprolactam, N - methyl pyrrolidone, pyrrolidone, piperidone, enantholactam, capryllactam or pelargonolactam.
