Abstract

The concentration of SO3, present esp. in power station exhaust fumes, is estimated by the charge in pH of aq. isopropanol used to wash it from a molecular sieve, after condensation from a sample drawn from the fumes. Pref. a diaphragm pump draws gas through the tube of a serpentine condenser, maintained at 60-80 degrees C and condensed SO3 is trapped by a sintered glass molecular sieve. Aq. isopropanol is then drawn through to wash SO3 into a stirred tank equipped with a pH meter, which may be calibrated directly in SO3 concentration referred to gas. All valves are operated e.g. by a rotating cam switch, and automatic washing of condenser by acetone and of measuring tank by demineralised water is incorporated. The method may be used to control injection of neutralising NH3. Time cycle is short, pH measurement stage pref. coincides with sampling stage.
