Abstract

Continuously extruded profiles, tubes or sheets of cross-linked thermoplastic material are formed under heat and pressure by mixing the thermoplastic material in granular or powder form with a cross-linking agent, heating the mixture to a temp. just below the cross-linking temp., splitting the material into a number of partial streams and reducing the cross section so as to apply pressure, the heat necessary for cross-linking being applied just prior to the passage of the material into the die head. Cross-linked or vulcanised profiles are formed in a single stage without using supplementary vulcanising apparatus. Pref. the apparatus has stream dividing ribs which can be heated and lead through a narrowing section to a heated head in the form of a mandrel leading to a heated die. One or more extruders may supply the die and may be connected to it obliquely or transversely. The parts of the appts. making contact with the synthetic material are pref. coated with a low friction material.
