Abstract

The parent patent plus three prior additions for a seal to fit alongside a bearing in a housing for a rotating shaft, where the seal incorporates a skirted metal collar fitted on the shaft opposite a metal housing containing a skirted seal made of an unspecified synthetic flexible material, is improved in that the skirted collar is moulded from a stiff plastic having a low coeff. of friction and good resistant to hydrocarbons. Pref. the collar is made from polypropylene heavily filled with glass spheres or 'ballotini', and the seal is made out of Neoprene (RTM-polychloroprene). Pref. the seal profile has two flexible webs aligned on opposite sides of the skirt on the collar. The collar profile is more readily produced in a moulding material than in metal as originally suggested, and the components are oil resistant.
