A gland packing includes a cord comprising fibres of polypropylene or polyamide which have been treated with an anti-friction additive and with a natural or synthetic resinous material to adhere the fibres together. The fibres may be braided and simultaneously sized with P.T.F.E., a butadiene-styrene rubber or a polyisoprene rubber and with antifriction additives of boron nitride, graphite or molybdenum disulphide. The cord may be formed around a central core of asbestos fibres.
