Abstract
The resin, useful as binders and adhesivs, is prepd. by a process which comprises (1) condensing 1 mole urea with 1.5-4.0 moles HCHO at 60-102 degrees C. at a pH of 7.2-9.0, (2) reacting the low-molecular resinous condensation product with an org. acid of the formula:- R-SO3H (where R is alkyl or aryl) at pH 2.0-6.0 until a resinous tacky product is formed, (3) neutralising the product to pH 7.2-9.0, (4) concentrating the product by removing 0-90% water, (5) reacting the concd. product with HCHO in an amt. of 20-30% of that initially introduced at 60-102 degrees C. in a neutral medium until the content of free HCHO in the product reaches 4-7%, and (6) stabilising the cooled product with an alkaline agent.
