Abstract
Heavy water is produced my 'Monotherm' type isotope exchange between synthesis gas and ammonia the novel feature being that the synthesis gas is passed in counter current to liquid ammonia in a column where the isotopes it contains are stripped out and then passed to an ammonia synthesis plant, where it is converted into ammonia, the quantity of synthesis gas converted being just sufficient to provide the necessary reflux of liquid ammonia in the stripping column.
