Abstract

This invention relates to a vacuum cleaning appliance which is convertible to act both as an upright type cleaner or cylinder type cleaner. The main air passageway (48,51) through the appliance includes a motor-driven suction fan unit (64, 65) and a valve device (85) which is operable to connect the passageway (48) either with an air inlet in a carpet engaging section (17) or with an air inlet in a socket (82) for receiving a cleaner head in the form of a hollow pipe (19) which is connected with the socket (82) by a flexible hose (21). The pipe (19) slides telescopically within the flexible hose (21) so as to engage within the socket (82) and to act as a handle (20). When located in the socket (82) the pipe (19) operates the valve device (85) to connect the air passageway (48) with the carpet engaging section (17).
