Abstract

Method for imparting water resistance to a fat thickened with lithium soap or to a fat thickened with lithium-calcium soap, characterized by performing the following operations simultaneously or sequentially: a) forming 15 to 2 parts by weight of a lithium soap or a lithium-calcium soap by saponification of a saponifiable material selected from fatty acids, hydroxy-substituted fatty acids, glycerides, and hydroxylated glycerides with a lithium compound or a mixture of lithium and calcium compounds that react with an alkaline form; b) incorporating said soap in 80 to 97 parts by weight of at least one mineral oil of lubricating viscosity; and c) mixing 5.0 to 0.1 parts by weight of the at least one additive selected from polyoxyalkylated alcohols, polyoxyalpylated alkylphenols, and polyoxyalkylated alkylenediamines.
