Abstract
A centrifuge for separating oil and heavier impurities from the cooling water of an i.c. engine comprises a hollow rotor 6 having an inlet 17 for the contaminated water, an outlet nozzle 19 for cleaned water arranged to produce a jet, the reaction of which imparts rotation to the rotor, and a disc 16 in the rotor located between the inlet 17 and the outlet nozzle 19 and extending outwardly from adjacent the axis of rotation to near the outer wall of the rotor to restrict flow between the inlet 17 and the outlet nozzle 19 to the gap between the rim of the disc 16 and the outer wall of the rotor. The cooling water to be cleaned is introduced through a connection 2, a duct 3 and a bore 4 in the housing 1 of the centrifuge and passes through a blind bore 8 and openings 9 in a stationary stem 5, through apertures 17 in a rotatable sleeve 12 and through apertures 17 in a bush 18 and enters the separating chamber 7 of the rotor. The cleaned cooling water flows in the direction of the arrows 20, 21 through the reaction nozzle 19 and flows out through an aperture 22 in the bottom of the housing 1. The separated oil flows in the direction of the arrow 23 past a disc 24 into a non-turbulent collecting chamber from which it is discharged intermittently or continuously through openings 11 and a blind bore 10 in the stem 5. The heavier impurities separate on to the inner surface of the outer wall of the rotor and can be removed during periodic cleaning of the centrifuge. The shell of the rotor is in two parts which are held together by the sleeve 12 and a nut 26. The parts 16, 18, 24 are held together by a ring 27 and a spring 28 which bears against the nut 26.
