Abstract

258,204. Carter, B. C. March 14, 1925. Density separators.-In a centrifugal machine for separating solid particles from liquids or gases the bowl is provided with a concentric annular conduit 16 between an inner tube 15 and an outer perforate tube 1. The conduit 16 is open at its ends and as the fluid passes through, the heavy particles are thrown through the perforations in the tube 1 into the drum 2. A gland 7 on the inlet end of the drum engages the stationary boss 8 of the supply inlet which contains a cone 14 and vanes 13 decreasing in pitch as they approach the rotating tubes 1, 15. The tube 15 is also provided with radial vanes 17 and the outlet opening through the rotating boss 18 is flared and provided with vanes 19 which decrease in pitch as they recede from the drum. The rotary parts are enclosed in a stationary casing 12 and the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is intended for the purification of oil. The dirty oil is delivered under pressure to the stationary boss 8 and passes between the vanes 13 into the annular space 16. By imping- ing on the vanes 17 the oil rotates the drum. It is carried round by the vanes 17 and any solid particles are separated from the main stream of oil; they pass through the perforations in the tube 1, through the oil in the drum 2, and accumulate on the wall. The surface of the wall may be roughened and cooling fans may be provided. Short tubular projections may be arranged at each hole in the tube 1. The drum may contain a, nest of tubes with' concentric annular spaces arranged in series or in parallel. An outlet with a small relief valve may be provided near the axis, for the discharge of any air passing with the oil through the drum. A modification, shown in Figs. 6 and 7, is used for cleaning gases. The annular bowl is mounted on the spindle 26, supported in bearings 28, 27 in a housing 29 carried by vanes 30 in an outer housing 31. This may be applied, for example, to the air intake of an internal-combustion engine. The central part 15* of the bowl is of stream line formation and carries vanes 33 so that the indrawn air rotates the bowl. Radial vanes 34 within the bowl assist in the separation of the particles which pass through the perforate wall 1* into the casing 2*. Curved vanes at the outlet of the bowl tend to straighten the air stream. External vanes 36 may be used to assist in the rotation of the bowl when it is used in an exposed position, as for instance, on aircraft. In a modification the spindle is fixed in a housing and the bowl rotates on it. The wall 1* may have a series of annular partitions.
