Abstract
The transesterification reactor as shown has a plurality of superimposed plates, 40a, 40b, &c., means for transfering the reaction mixture from each plate to the next lower plate, means for heating each plate and comprising for example a heating coil (43) on each plate (Fig. 4, not shown), means 34, 35 for supplying starting materials, means 32, 33 for withdrawing reaction products and means for sensing the temperatures on the uppermost and intermediate plates and controlling the supply of reactants in response to the temperature readings to give optimum reaction conditions. In the reactor of Fig. 2 (not shown), the coolant flow rate and temperature are also controlled.
