Abstract

In a free surface ship roll stabilization tank 12 comprising two wing tank portions and an intermediate tank portion between the wing tank portions, the tank has internal fore and aft walls 18, 20 extending partially across the tank from opposite side walls at the boundaries between the wing tank portions and the intermediate tank portion, and an internal athwartship's wall 30, 32 extends in the intermediate tank portion to serve as a partition defining aft and forward parts of the intermediate tank portion. Opening 34 in the athwartship's wall provides communication between the forward and aft parts of the intermediate tank portion, one wing tank portion being in communication with one of the forward and aft parts of the intermediate tank portion and the other of the wing tank portions being in communication with the other of the forward and aft parts of the intermediate tank portion through the openings provided by the fore and aft walls 18, 20 as a result of their partial extent across the tank. Movement of liquid which partially fills the tank may be activated by pumps controlled by standard sensing equipment.
