Method for preparing rust inhibiting compositions and highly basic fats, said method comprising: preparing a mixture consisting essentially of about 2 to 65 weight percent of a neutral salt, oil-soluble dispersing agent, from 5 to 80 percent by weight approximately weight of a non-volatile, oil-compatible carrier material, from about 1 to 6 weight percent of water of about 10 to 40 weight percent of an alcohol, and a carbonate-alkaline earth metal complex derived from the reaction, in the presence of a lower aliphatic alcohol containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, of carbon dioxide with a compound selected from the group consisting of oxides, hydroxides and alkaline earth metal alcoholates, said mixture containing an amount of said complex such that the alkaline earth metal portion thereof is from 1.0 weight percent to about 9 weight percent of the total weight of the to mixing, and heating said mixture to a temperature of at least 50ºC and until a noticeable change in viscosity occurs.
