Abstract

In a two-bed warp machine for knitting tights or the like certain guide bars are shogged over adjacent needles of one bed during formation of the body portion and over needles on the opposite beds during formation of the leg portions. The control of these bars is shifted from one to the other of two sets of pattern chains in an auxiliary pattern mechanism. Guide bars 1, 2 and 11, 12 which supply yarn to front and rear needle beds respectively, and bars 3, 9 and 4, 10 which supply single ends of yarn to both beds at the ends of the blanks are controlled by main pattern mechanism A. The remaining bars 5-8 are controlled by auxiliary mechanism B which includes two sets of chains 51, 51a. The bars are moved by slides 42 mounted in a box 43, movable by a fluid cylinder and piston 56, 57. When a counter 65 has registered a predetermined number of courses, set by an operator (on scales 71, 72, Fig. 3 not shown), the box is shifted so that following rollers 50 follow the other set of chains. While 'body fabric is knit guide supply yarn to the front and rear needle bars 5, 6 and 7, 8 each carrying one control beds respectively. To knit two legs integral with the body, when the box is shifted, bars 5, 7 and 6, 8 supply yarn to opposite needles on the two beds to join the inside of the legs. Several strings of blanks, joined alternately waist to waist and toe to toe, are knit across the machine. The main and auxiliary pattern mechanisms, which may each include two sets of chains, may be at the same end of the machine. In a modification (Figs. 8-10 not shown) the bars are controlled by levers (94) pivoted on an axle (100) in a movable frame (104, 112- 115). The upper ends of the levers carry guides (97) which slide in a grooved upper frame member (98). The bank of levers is movable to follow either of two sets of chains (91, 91a).
