Abstract

A safety device for gas-fuelled apparatus comprises a combustion chamber 1 containing the tip of a pilot burner 3, a thermosensitive element 5 located in the immediate proximity of the tip of the pilot burner, and flameretaining means, such as a grill 6, located such that when the atmosphere within the chamber is of normal composition, the pilot flame 4 does not reach the flame-retaining means, but if the atmosphere becomes contaminated, in particular by an increase in the CO 2 level, the flame becomes detached from the burner tip and is caught on the flame-retaining means so that the thermosensitive element 5 is no longer heated, and on cooling, shuts off a gas supply valve associated with the gas-fuelled apparatus. As shown, the combustion chamber is in the form of a tube having openings 2, 7 to the atmosphere which are grilled and the thermosensitive element 5 is the bulb of a thermostat. Fig. 3 shows the device used in the gas flow system of a catalytic burner 20, the valve 10 being not completely closed even when the outlet 15 is closed, thereby allowing in this position a limited flow of gas to the burner 20 and to the pilot burner 3.
