Abstract

A chloride-free NPK fertilizer, having a content of (N+K 2 O+P 2 O 5 ) exceeding 43À5% by weight, is prepared by reacting solid potassium chloride with liquid and/or gaseous dinitrogen tetroxide at a temperature of at most 80 C. in a reaction mixture comprising phosphoric acid or a mixture of phosphoric acid and nitric acid, the phosphoric acid being in excess of the nitric acid, the acid medium having a strength of at least 8N, the phosphoric acid being counted as a 1À5-basic acid neutralizing the resulting acid/KNO 3 suspension with ammonia after removal of the nitrosyl chloride produced, e.g. by blowing it out with nitrogen or oxygen, and shaping and drying the resultant mixture. Other salts, e.g. NH 4 NO 3 , may be added to the reaction mixture before, during or after neutralization with ammonia to give a mixed fertilizer having a desired N:K 2 O :P 2 O 3 ratio. The nitric acid reactant may be formed in situ, by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with liquid and/or gaseous N 2 O 4 .N 2 O 4 may be recovered and recycled by means of the reaction: the Cl 2 being separated from the N 2 O 4 , and this N 2 O 4 recycled.
