Abstract
A classifier for separating a pulp into coarsegrained sinks and an overflow containing fines comprises a trough 3 having an inclined bottom, an inlet 1 for the pulp, a weir 2 for fines overflow, a conveyor 4 for conveying the sinks to an outlet 6 at the upper end of the trough and one or more transverse rows of water inlet openings 10 in the trough bottom. The openings may be constituted by openings of separate pipes 7, as shown, or of screen or perforated plate apertures. The openings in adjacent rows are preferably staggered. To prevent clogging of the water inlets with sinks in response to a reduction in pressure, and to prevent wear of the trough bottom, the latter is lined at least in the region of the inlet openings 10 with elastic material 8, e.g. rubber, which has incisions 9 cut therein over the openings 10 to act as a non-return valve for water admission. The water admitted through the openings produce turbulent and upflow zones in the pulp preventing hindered settling of the sinks and adherence of the fines to the sinks.
