Abstract
Homopolymers of butadiene with a Parallel- Plate Recovery value of at least 0À75 mm. are made by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a lithium hydrocarbon catalyst, e.g. butyl lithium, and at a peak temperature of at least 212 F. The butadiene contains as impurities no more than 400 p.p.m. of 1,2- butadiene, 100 p.p.m. of alpha-acetylenes, 200 p.p.m. of carbonyls, and no more than 50 p.p.m. of propadiene, and the total effect of these impurities on the polymerization is no greater than that produced by 400 p.p.m. of 1,2-butadiene. A liquid inert to the catalyst may optionally be present during polymerization.
