Abstract

With a centrifuge of the type having a perforated drum 1 and a pusher-ring 7, one being axially reciprocable relative to the other, and an inlet funnel 12, there is incorporated a preliminary concentrating centrifuge 14 of the type having an imperforate frusto-conical drum 15 and a screw conveyer 16. As described in relation to Fig. 1, a mixture enters imperforate drum 15 through a pipe 27 whereby preliminary separation occurs, the more liquid part flowing through ducts 20 to a collecting chamber 22 while the more solid part is impelled by conveyer 16 to enter funnel '12 and thence to notary perforated drum 1. Drum 1 is rotated by a hollow shaft 3 which encloses a hollow shaft 5 for rotating pusher plate 6 carrying ring 7. Axial reciprocation of plate 6 relative to drum 1 is achieved by hydraulic means comprising piston 8 and cylinder 9. Shalt 3 and hence shaft 5 are rotated by drive belts 11. Screw conveyer 16 is driven by a shaft 24. The resulting centrifuged-out solid is deposited in chamber 33. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a similar embodiment, 'but here the pusher-plate (37) is axially fixed and it is the perforated drum (39) which reciprocates. The imperforate frustoconical drum (42) is mounted with the pusherplate (37), i.e. it is axially stationary.
