Abstract

Articles of large volume of a thermoplastics material are made by filling a mould in two consecutive stages, the first stage being without any substantial pressure rise and the second by injection at high pressure. In the example shown the material is plasticized in a cylinder 2 by heating elements la and introduced into the mould by a rotating screw 3. Axial advance of the screw effects full pressure injection. A valve pin 8 operated through a pivoted crank 9 maintains the nozzle 6 closed during the plasticizing stage. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) both low and high-pressure filling are effected by means of a piston.
