Abstract

A method of making a hollow tank from rovings 3 of plastics soaked fibrous material, e.g. glass, comprises winding the roving about a rotating core 1 by traversing the roving to lay it helically on the cylindrical part of the core, and, at the ends of the core, discontinuing the traverse and while the rotation of the core continues, effecting radial movement of the roving to lay it over the ends of the core. The rovings are laid over the ends of the cores in a starshaped formation, e.g. a five pointed star as shown in Fig. 7, and each successive star is circumferentially displaced from the preceeding star until the core is covered. In Fig. 1 the core 1 on a spindle 2 is rotated by an electric motor 12, gear-box 13 and gearing 14, 15 which also drives a control mechanism comprising a stretchable belt 50 having an abutment 34 which acts on two switches 32, 33. The roving guide 4 is mounted on the piston rod 3 of a fluid operated cylinder 8 situated on a carriage 5 reciprocated by a chain drive 19 driven by a chain 26 from a sprocket 25 driven from the motor 12 by way of a coupling 17. In use, in relation to Fig. 1, the roving guide 4 is withdrawn by the piston rod 3 and, with the core 1 rotating, is traversed to the left. At the end of the core the carriage operates a switch 131 that actuates the coupling 17 to disconnect the traverse to the carriage and, with the core still rotating the abutment 34 operates the switch 32 to cause the cylinder 8 to move the roving radially of the core to lay it over the end of the core (Fig. 4, not shown). The switch 33 is then operated by the abutment 34 to cause the roving guide to withdraw radially so that the roving is then, due to the continued rotation of the core, on the other side of the core, the switch 33 also actuates the coupling 17 so that traverse of the carriage is restarted and the carriage 5 moves to the right to lay the roving on the cylindrical part of the core until the other end is reached whereupon the procedure is repeated. The controls are operable to form various configurations of rovings and embodiments are described wherein the core is either removed from the tank or left to form a lining.
